Anyone who has machined threads of any kind has had the unenviable task of having to re-cut threads at some point. Re-cutting threads on a modern CNC is typically not a problem as long as the workpiece has not been removed from the chuck.
Once this happens, re-cutting threads accurately becomes a time consuming and frustrating process.

Enter German Machine Tool Builder Weiler and their line of Cycle Controlled CNC Flat-Bed Tool Room Lathes.

These machines greatly simplify the process of re-cutting threads. It is now possible to pick-up the lead of an existing thread and be re-cutting it in less than one minute!
In industries like Down-Hole Oil Field work, re-cutting threads is an every-day occurrence and Weiler makes the process effortless.

1) Load the part to be re-threaded.

2) Set the Z0 part Origin.

3) Touch-off the threading tool.

4) Create a Workpiece that will contain our Thread Cycle Data.

5) Select the Cycle Type. In this case we'll choose a Thread Cutting Cycle.

6) Define the Thread Cycle Data.
In this case we will define an API 2-3/8 Internal Flush Pin w/4 Threads per Inch.

7) Next we define the Thread Geometry Data.

8) The next step is to manually position our threading tool in order to pick-up the thread lead.

9) We then press the "Find Start Angle" button.

10) Weiler does something ingenious that simplifies the whole process. They have included a Rotary Axis Encoder on the Main Spindle. This allows the user to accurately find the rotation position of the main spindle at the point where they have positioned the threading tool to pick up the lead of the thread. At this point, the user simply presses the 'Teach Start Angle' button and the proper rotary orientation is established.

11) The user is may now simply manually retract the tool, start the spindle and either execute the complete cycle or simply perform a manual re-cut of the last pass.

It doesn't get any easier than this!
Weiler has a real winner with this Conversational Cycle Control System. If your company that needs to re-cut threads on a regular basis, you should put Weiler Cycle Controlled Flat-Bed Tool Room Lathes at the top of the list of Machine Tools to consider.
